“The pilgrims” is an allegory on the notion of journey, or pilgrimage, and brings together many of the recurring themes in Burns’ work. Each of the pictorial elements used has both a literal and symbolic purpose (the doves for hope, the wolves for ever-present threat or danger, and the wilderness of the landscape itself).
